چکیده

Catalytic combustion is an environmentally benign technology which has recently reached the stage of commercialization. Palladium is the catalyst of choice when considering gas turbines fuelled with natural gas because of its superior activity for methane oxidation. Several fundamental issues are still open and their understanding would result in an improvement of the technology. Hence, the work presented in this thesis aims at the identification of some of the parameters which govern the combustion activity of palladium-based catalysts. The first part of this work gives a background to catalytic combustion and a brief comparison with other existing technologies. Paper I reviews some of the issues related to material development and combustor design. The second part of this thesis consists of an experimental investigation on palladium-based catalysts. The influence of the preparation method on the properties of these catalyst materials is investigated in Paper II. Paper III examines the activity of the following catalysts: Pd/Al2O3, Pd/Ba-Al2O3 and Pd/La-Al2O3. Specific attention is given to the metal-support interaction which strongly affects the combustion activity of palladium. The effect of doping of the support by addition of cerium is reported in Paper IV. Finally, the deactivation of combustion catalysts is considered. The various deactivation processes which may affect high temperature combustion catalysts are reviewed in Paper V. Paper VI focuses on the poisoning of supported palladium catalysts by sulphur species. Palladium exhibits a higher resistance to sulphur poisoning than transition metals. Nevertheless, the nature of the support material plays an important role and may entail a severe loss of activity when sulphur is present in the fuel-air mixture entering the combustion chamber.

Highly sensitive methane catalytic combustion micro-sensor based on mesoporous structure and nano-catalyst.

In order to get a methane catalytic combustion micro-sensor, two different catalytic systems used in traditional methane catalytic combustion sensors were fabricated into a mesoporous structure and their catalytic activities were investigated. In comparison, the Rh2O3-Al2O3 system can form more a uniform mesoporous structure and has a much higher specific surface area. Even more importantly, it...

Modeling of Catalytic Combustion and Conversion of Methane Modelization De La Combustion Catalytique Et De La Conversion Catalytique Du Méthane

Catalytic combustion and conversion of methane are characterized by a complex interaction of transport and chemical reactions on the catalytic surface and in the gas phase. Computational tools have been developed in which the catalytic processes are coupled to the surrounding flow. These tools are applied to study catalytic combustion of methane on platinum and catalytic conversion of methane t...

The Influence of Slight Protuberances in a Micro-Tube Reactor on Methane/Moist Air Catalytic Combustion

The combustion characteristics of methane/moist air in micro-tube reactors with different numbers and shapes of inner wall protuberances are investigated in this paper. The micro-reactor with one rectangular protuberance (six different sizes) was studied firstly, and it is shown that reactions near the protuberance are mainly controlled by diffusion, which has little effect on the outlet temper...

Synthesis of Barium Hexaferrite and Catalytic Behavior in the Combustion of Methane

Barium hexafemte doped with iridium was synthesized by two methods: the citrate gel and the polyacrylamide gel methods. The nature of phases obtained and the specific surface area were determined after heat treatments in air at 700°C, 900°C and in air containing 10% humidity at 1200°C. The catalytic activity in the combustion of methane was measured after heat treatment at 900°C. These hexaferr...
